Are Ciba Night and Day contact lenses dangerous?
I just read that you can wear them for up to thirty days, not even removing them to sleep. I was told that it's very dangerous to sleep in contact lenses as they can stick to your eyeball and damage it or something like that. Would you trust these contact lenses?
The problem is that the corneas of the eye breathe through the skin. Contact lenses restrict the flow of oxygen. During the day this is no problem. Enough gas flows through the lens. But when you close your eyes then your eyelids further restrict the flow.
Your corneas must get air or die so if you don't get enough oxygen to the eyes then tiny blood vessels will grow to supply the cornea. This is not good because you really want your corneas to be as clear as possible.
Another problem is that when you sleep the tear ducts switch off. Normally tears are produced continuously - they make their way into the nose where they evaporate. These lenses are 80+% water. They rely on tears to keep them inflated. Overnight they will dry out a bit. However when you wake up you soon reconstitute them. This is a nuisance but not serious. You won't scratch your eyes but it can be uncomfortable for a couple of seconds. I can make my eyes water with an artificial yawn so when I sleep in my lenses or if the eyes feel tired, I simply squeeze out some tears.
With regard to Ciba Specials? Well Ciba are a reputable company and long term lenses have been around for over 30 years so they should know about and have fixed any problems. One thing is that because you aren't messing about with your eyes every day then you reduce the possibility of eye infection - always a hazard when you stick your fingers in your eyes.
I may ask about them myself next time I renew my lens setup. But if I do then I will make sure that I attend regular eye examinations. And I might take them out once a week just to be safe.
Oh yes. There is another problem. I did have long term lenses years ago and I used to take them out every Sunday evening. Monday morning I would wake up with gummy eyes. I needed to wash my face before I could even think about putting lenses in. It turned out that I was just a little bit allergic to my laundry powder. During the week the eyes were protected by the lenses but Sunday night they were exposed. If I didn't wear the lenses at all then after a day or so the eyes go used to it and the problem went away.
