Permanent Hair Color: What are the Advantages and Disadvantages
To alter the color of hair, one has two choices to include going to a beauty parlor whereby an expert colorist or stylist would do the job or buying a commercial product and coloring hair in the privacy and comfort of home. Each option has its own set of pros and cons, which makes it hard to choose.
Professional as opposed to Commercial Hair Color
Price is the main difference between the two options. To get hair professionally colored, one could fork out anywhere from $50 to $150 depending on the beauty parlor.
The price is worth it, though, since you can expect the quality to be first-class when you want to have an expert color your hair. However, as of late, you'll also find many at-home commercial products with top quality ingredients that can produce good results. In reality, sales for at-home commercial hair color products have considerably increased due to the increase in their quality.
Contrasting Semi-Permanent and Permanent Color
The manner in which Permanent hair color changes is different from other hair color types. Though many people know this is the longest lasting option, many do not have a complete understanding of why. So here's a comparison of permanent hair color and semi-permanent hair color.
Semi-Permanent Color - Semi-permanent hair color products have pigment molecules that are considerably smaller than the pigment molecules of permanent hair color products. What happens then is that the hair shafts merely get partially penetrated by the hair color. In addition, semi-permanent color is created with very small amounts of developer, which would be peroxide or ammonia, or none at all. While this means that there would be less damage to hair, it also means that the hair color will fade quickly.
Permanent Color - The hair shafts can easily be penetrated by the bigger pigment molecules in permanent hair color products. Ammonia is likewise used as an oxidizing and alkalizing agent, causing the color to last considerably longer.
Good Reasons to Opt for Permanent Hair Color
Besides semi-permanent and permanent hair color, there are temporary color and highlights/lowlights. If you want gorgeous highlights that give your hair a natural look, go with semi-permanent color. However, be aware that this option has a disadvantage: color fades after 5 shampoos.
Semi-permanent hair color has two advantages, which is the reason this option is very popular. One advantage is that it produces shimmer so that hair has highlights that make it look natural. The other advantage is that it covers gray hair rather well. There are a few advantages to permanent hair color as well.
Permanent hair color is well, long lasting -- the color isn't going to wash out like other hair color products. Essentially, the only way this color will come out is by stripping, a process that only an expert can perform. Permanent hair color does fade, but it takes considerably longer and is less visible due to the formulation.
A lot of people like permanent hair color products simply because they have a choice -- they can either use products having chemicals (conventional formulation) or products which have organic or 100% natural ingredients. However, due to the way this product is manufactured, the results would be pretty much identical with the exception of natural products being better on hair.
